It was a bitterly cold autumn night in 1978, at a deserted end of the cargo area of John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City. At 300 a.m., the most notorious armed robbery in American history started to unfold, and so did the meticulous planning of the mastermind.
Thirty minutes into the robbery, a Lufthansa German Airlines cargo worker arrived at the back of the building and crossed the path of three heavily armed wiseguys from Brooklyn. A bloody encounter ensued and the wiseguys took control of the building and all ten of its employees. The wiseguys, later to be known as Goodfellas, emptied the Valuable Room and made their record-breaking cash withdrawal.
In just over one hour, the wiseguys drove away with the Mother Lode, five million bucks in untraceable cash and supposedly a big payoff for each of them.
Forget everything in the newspapers about the diligent investigation initiated by the FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Brooklyn.
It never happened.
What is true? The bloody trail of murder; a dozen people including a wife and a girlfriend.
From the very start, the investigation into the $5,850,000 heist was bungled by the feds with their incompetence, disregard for the law, lies, threats and one-way street attitude. A newspaper reported, “It’s disorganized law enforcement, against organized crime.”
I crossed the path of the wiseguys and FBI. I was that cargo worker. I kept notes. This is my story.

"Inside" is a fascinating account of an incident/heist that I knew little about. I placed myself in Waco, Texas on a consulting assignment at this time when the "Miracle on Ice" was coming up and Pink Floyd released "The Wall." Without the author's riveting account of this enormous theft, I never would have known what had occured. The incompetence and cover-up by the FBI is something all citizens need to be aware of. Mr. Whalen was treated more like the criminal instead of the victim. "Inside" is non-fiction but the author writes in the syle of a novel wich brings his personal account to light. Everyone needs to read this book as this, God forbid, could happen to any one of us.

Inside the Lufthansa HEI$T The FBI Lied eBook Kerry Whalen Reviews

Ann interesting perspective from a person who was there first hand.
A very exciting story of a young employee at JFK who was there as the hijack took place. Also went into a lot of interesting info about the law enforecement follow-up.
First let me start by saying that, I have known Kerry Whalen as a colleague, friend, drinking buddy, and fellow knights of columbus member, since the mid 70's, and was an employee of Lufthansa Cargo when the robbery went down. This book tells it exactly as it happened, as no other book or news/magazine article have come close to. I witnessed the terror that he went through, trying to live a normal working mans life, throughout his ordeal with the FBI, long after the robbery went down. He has done a great job in re-telling his story, and sprinkles it with his humor. I'm sure a lot of my former colleagues ( i retired from Lufthansa cargo in 2012), will order this book, and if they are reading this, i am telling them to do so. Readers who list Goodfella's as one of their favorite movies will get an inside look into a very big part of what the movie was about, straight from a real life victim. no bull. all 100% fact
This is a terrific read for anyone who's interested in the crime behind the film Goodfellas. But it's not just the story of the heist - it's the story of an everyday guy who, as one of the victims of the crime, gets caught up in the ensuing storm of media coverage and FBI shenanigans.

This story give you a feeling of being there during the heist and the pain that was inflicted, to the top of Kerry Whalen head as he was pistol whipped and thinking that the next step would be a bullet in the head, as he was on the ground .
Knowing the area around Kennedy Airport, it did stir the memories of growing up in Howard Beach, and the rumors of all the crime at the airport .Which turned out to be true. Most people looked the other way, but not Kerry Whalen, who named the ones responsible for the biggest heist in the United States history The FBI should have listened to him.
I thought this book would be an interesting read, I was wrong, Mr Whalen writes like he reciting a story for the tenth time, and he thinks speaking in cliches makes him sound better, it doesn't The reason I gave it two stars instead of on is because feeling for Henry Hill, I always thought Hill was a lowlife liar who tried to make him self sound better for the book, then the movie almost tried to paint him as a saint who made mistakes because of other people
This book offers insights into the Lufthansa heist by a JFK airport employee who was injured in the course of the robbery by Jimmy Burke's crew. Provides details not found in other works. Could have been better written with assistance of a professional writer or editor, as Kerry Whalen tends to indulge in cliches and unexplained esoteric references which become irritating at times. Still worth reading. I would recommend as a supplement to other works on the subject, to those interested in more fully understanding the Lufthansa heist in terms of law enforcement's role.
